TO DIE IN DOWNTOWN
DIRECTED ad edited BY AUSTIN SAYA
WRITTEN BY RYK
2010 was a pivotal year of gentrification and fast economic growth in downtown Los Angeles. With Skid Row only a
stones throw away, newfound residents ushered in a new era of community. Yet the renaissance did not go
without cost. The sense of anxiety from such rapid change reverberated and depression ran rampant. In an
expanse of several months, seven suicides were reported within a four block radius from ages ranging 22 to 74.
Victims included artists to transplants, ethnicities from white, Asian, Latino and black. Coincidentally archived
reports indicated a similar series of “death leaps” had took place fifty years prior in downtown Los Angeles in the
late 1950s during yet another time of economic growth. Birth of a city anew begat death of a city of old.
2010 was also the year when director Austin Saya and writer RYK met while living in downtown. Having personally
witnessed such tragedies firsthand, Saya and RYK forged an artistic friendship through filmmaking in establishing
CBCOM, a film art studio.
“To Die In Downtown” was written by RYK in recanting past memories with Los Angeles in the foreground, the city
acting as both environment and persona in this telling. Collaborating with Saya in the portrayal of this cityscape
was an act of genuine expression, revisiting familiar ground.
This short film is an homage to downtown Los Angeles and a tribute to lives lost.
